Weather satellite map & cloud images

Weather satellite images provide a wide view of cloud systems over land and sea. They can help you see the structure of a weather front and how cloud areas have moved. Check the image time: a satellite image records an earlier observation, even when the service updates frequently.

Start with the image type

Visible imagery uses reflected sunlight, so ordinary visible images need daylight. Infrared channels detect emitted radiation and can provide information at night. Providers may combine channels or add colour enhancements; the legend explains what those colours represent.

A bright or strongly coloured area is not automatically heavy rain. Depending on the channel, the image may emphasise reflectivity, cloud-top temperature or another property rather than precipitation at ground level.

Follow a sequence, not one frame

Move through the available images to follow the development of a cloud band. Its outline can change as clouds form and dissolve. Compare the satellite view with the rain map before deciding whether an approaching cloud area is likely to bring precipitation.

The imagery available depends on the satellite product and region. A gap, a dark area or reduced detail is not proof of clear skies. High clouds can also hide lower clouds from the satellite's view.

Use it alongside the local forecast

Satellite imagery is particularly helpful for understanding the broader setting around a destination. For a walk, photography session or coastal outing, combine that view with the hourly forecast. After sunset, check that the selected image is suitable for nighttime interpretation. Future cloud movement belongs to a forecast layer, not to an unobserved future satellite photograph.

Questions about this map

Is satellite imagery the same as rain radar?

No. They observe different properties. Satellite cloud imagery can show a broad weather system without confirming rainfall at your location.

Why is part of the satellite map dark?

Visible imagery needs sunlight. Nighttime areas may be dark unless the provider supplies an infrared or blended product; check the product description.
