Map information

Precipitation estimates combine radar, satellite and model data where available. They are not direct rain measurements at every point.

The map keeps its own scale, timestamp and required source credits. Read the sources and licences for coverage and data details.

Weather and seasons: Bouvet Island

Use the maps to explore weather across Bouvet Island. No capital forecast is shown for this territory. The regional background below offers context for reading the maps; it does not describe every part of the territory or replace a forecast for your destination.

Antarctica and southern polar environments

Coast and interior are different

Antarctic conditions vary between the high continental interior, the coast and nearby island environments. The interior's greater elevation and distance from the ocean are important differences. Southern Hemisphere summer and winter occur at opposite times to those in the Northern Hemisphere; daylight also changes strongly with latitude and season. None of these broad patterns makes one coastal location representative of the whole region, or a summer date a guarantee of mild weather.

Understand the map's limits

A global map may provide useful background for clouds, wind or temperature, but local observational coverage and forecast detail vary. Check the timestamp, layer and location carefully. Satellite imagery is not rain radar, and snow or ice visible in an image does not establish surface or travel conditions. A blank radar area can reflect a lack of coverage. Zooming into a map cannot supply observations that are not available.

Use specialist operational information

General weather pages are for orientation and do not replace the specialist forecasts and procedures used by expedition operators, vessels or research programmes. A forecast for one station should not be applied to a distant landing site or inland route. Where no suitable capital or forecast point exists, this site leaves that forecast absent. For decisions on travel or operations, use the current information and instructions of the responsible organisations.
