Wind gust map & gust forecast

Wind gusts are brief increases above the surrounding wind speed. The gust map highlights forecast peaks that can matter for an exposed walk, cycling or outdoor work. Read it with the average-wind map: the two layers describe related but different parts of the weather.

Read the strongest bursts

Check the selected time and the unit beside the colour scale. Metres per second, kilometres per hour and knots are not interchangeable numbers. For example, 20 m/s is 72 km/h. The displayed gust is a model estimate of a brief peak, not a speed expected to continue throughout the hour.

Compare the gust forecast with average wind for the same place and time. A large difference suggests more variable conditions, but the map cannot tell you the exact second that a burst will occur.

Why exposure matters

An open coast, a bridge and a sheltered city street can experience different wind conditions within a small area. Hills and gaps in terrain can modify the flow. Model grids simplify that detail, so the map should not be read as a precise measurement beside every building.

Showers and thunderstorms can produce sudden local wind changes. Their strongest bursts may be poorly represented in a broad-scale forecast; check current warnings when unsettled weather approaches.

Plan a practical time window

For a journey or outdoor task, compare several frames around your intended time. A forecast peak can shift as the weather system develops. Combine gust information with rain, snow or fire-weather information as relevant to your region and season. For boating or mountain activities, use the relevant specialist forecast as well as this general map.

Questions about this map

Does the map show winds that have already been measured?

The gust layer is model guidance. A forecast time close to now does not turn it into a network of live wind measurements.

Can strong gusts occur with moderate average wind?

Yes. Average wind smooths out variations, while gusts describe short peaks. Checking both layers gives a more useful picture of expected conditions.
