Sun forecast & cloud map

Looking for sunshine today or tomorrow? This view uses the total-cloud forecast to help you find potentially clearer periods. It is a cloud-based guide to sunshine, not a literal sun radar, a measurement of solar radiation or a prediction of the exact number of sunshine hours.

Look for gaps in the cloud

Read the cloud-cover percentage and move through the hours that matter to your plans. Less cloud can allow more direct sunshine when the sun is above the horizon. High or thin cloud may still allow a bright sky, while a thicker low cloud sheet can reduce direct sunlight.

Do not translate a percentage straight into sunshine minutes. For example, 25% cloud cover does not promise 45 minutes of sun in the next hour. Cloud movement and thickness affect what happens at a single location.

Remember daylight and the season

The same cloud map can accompany very different daylight conditions. In the far north, summer daylight is long and winter daylight can be very short or absent. A clear nighttime frame therefore does not indicate a sunny period.

For a walk, a picnic or photography, check the date and local time as well as cloud cover. Nearby hills, buildings and woodland can put your chosen spot in shade even under a clear sky.

Add the information your activity needs

Compare the cloud forecast with recent satellite imagery for a useful check on the broader pattern. Use temperature and wind forecasts to judge outdoor comfort. If sun exposure matters, consult the UV forecast separately: cloud cover alone is not a dependable measure of ultraviolet intensity. For solar-energy planning, use dedicated radiation and production data rather than estimating output from this map.

Questions about this map

Can I use this as a sun radar?

No. The selected layer shows total cloud cover. It does not provide radiation in watts per square metre or solar-panel production.

Does a cloudy forecast mean no sunshine?

Not necessarily. Clouds can break, move or be thin enough for sunlight to pass through. Treat the map as guidance about the sky, not a timed guarantee.
